We tend to not talk about our non-fiction line here much. And since most of you all are here for the comics I think that is partially justified. But our latest book is something near and dear to the heart of Vertical…the company. COMPOUND CINEMATICS is a memoir of sorts by movie screenwriter Shinobu Hashimoto. In this book, he goes into detail about his time with Akira Kurosawa and how broke into the Japanese film industry. It might not be apparent to most of our manga fans, but if anything J-Pop influences Vertical it tends to be film. We have released a number of works with film tie-ins: RING, Lala Pipo, Summer Wars, Sakuran, Helter Skelter, MW, 5cm/S, Garden of Words, etc. We’ve also worked with directors like Beat Takeshi (BOY and A GURU IS BORN) and Makoto Shinkai (A Sky Longing for Memories). Our boss is also a film guy, having worked for the Japanese film studio Nikkatsu previously. So yeah, film and Japanese film, in particular, will always be part of the Vertical soul. And with this new release we wish to share a little insight as to how that industry works from two of it’s innovators - Shinobu Hashimoto and Akira Kurosawa.
