what exactly is Insufficient Direction about or like? I'm a huge fan of Hideaki Anno but I don't exactly know what it is. Like, how factual is it? Does it go behind the scenes about the production of his works or is it more like a comedy thing?

Good question.
Insufficient Direction is what is called an essay manga. It is a quasi-autobiography often told through humorous, and sometimes self-deprecating means, with a minimalist art style.
In this case Moyoco Anno, known best for her gorgeous josei designs uses an almost super-deformed style of heta-uma to render the details of her engagement to anime director Hideaki Anno.
Now if you are expecting to read about GAINAX or khara, you will not get very much on either. This is really about the couple’s relationship. That said, if you were ever interested in finding out what makes Hideaki Anno tick, this is the MANGA for you.
Moyoco overloads this book with all sorts of sci-fi and anime references. It really is a pop-culture experience from the perspective of a super-fan who was able to make it big in the industry. Anno’s habits, his passions, and his flaws are all laid bare for the public to experience. And readers can come to learn why his career has taken him in some funny directions over the years.
The book also features an essay from Anno. He turns the tables around and describes his feelings towards Moyoco and how he looks at the comic and animation industry. And that is followed up by a 30-page long note section written by me and the Japanese editor for this book. YIKES!! That alone was possibly one of the harder parts of the book (outside of lettering all the crazy jokes). And if you are wondering how factual it is… it is VERY. At the same time, things are punched up a little for effect.
I honestly love this book. It shows the sensitivity of Moyoco Anno and it reveals a side of Hideaki that few outside of the Japanese industry have witnessed first hand. It is a HOOT and one of the more unique manga to ever have been published in English.
